​Cannabis – around 80% more prescriptions between March and May 2017

​Evidence from the statutory health insurance market indicates double-digit growth, albeit from a low base

March this year saw the entry into force of the German Act to amend narcotic drugs provisions. Since then, patients with serious illnesses have been entitled to reimbursement of prescription cannabis provided certain conditions are met. IQVIA has used initial market figures to analyse whether the change in the law is already having an effect on the prescription behavior of doctors. It was found that, between March and May 2017, the number of prescriptions paid for by statutory health insurance for off-the-shelf medications and extemporaneous preparations containing cannabis grew by 80 percent.
