Too many hospitals leave the potential of their clinical database untouched, incorrectly assuming that unstructured Electronic Health Record (EHR) data is impossible to mine. One Belgian hospital successfully queried its EHR database using the CTcue function in the Forcea HealthReport Clinical module. The simple, quick search yielded thousands of Euros in missed revenue.

In many hospitals, quite a few bladder scans never get invoiced. This is inherent to the assignment of the procedure, which is used to measure residual bladder volume. Bladder scans are usually administered by nurses. Unlike physicians, their work is not automatically invoiced. It requires a manual intervention to enter the procedure into the financial system, a step that can be easily overlooked.

One Belgian hospital set out to validate its invoicing by querying its clinical database. Bladder scans served as their test case. Together with IQVIA Healthcare experts, they determined a method to search for patients who had undergone the procedure. First they searched for the term “bladder scan” and its synonyms in the entire patient database within the last 12 months. This yielded 71 patients, 4 of which were eliminated because it could not be established the procedure had effectively been executed. This data was then cross-checked with the financial patient records, yielding a missed revenue of thousands of Euros. “This use case illustrates the effectiveness and ease with which you can search clinical data, even when it is unstructured copy like physician instructions. But it also shows the power of linking this data with other systems, such as the financial database,” says Linda Ludikhuyze with IQVIA Healthcare.

“It is true that healthcare data is complex, but that doesn’t mean retrieving information from EHRs is impossible or even difficult. On the contrary, the CTcue platform is easy to use, saves administrators a ton of manual cross-checking time, and produces reliable results,” says Linda Ludikhuyze. “We see so many hospitals leaving the potential of their clinical databased untouched. From drug therapy cross-checks, to BMUC follow-up, to identifying quality indicators, to feasibility study facilitation, Forcea HealthReport Clinical can support departments throughout the hospital, including general management, medical leadership, physicians and the Clinical Trial team,” concludes Linda Ludikhuyze.
