Investigating Perceptions: Quota Among Pharmacists in Belgium

IQVIA recently investigated the perception of "quota" among pharmacists in Belgium, revealing significant insights, thanks to organizing Roundtables in February 2025 with Belgian pharmacists:

  • Impact on Operations and Patient Experience: Pharmacists perceive "Pharmacontingentering" or "quota" as a serious issue that heavily impacts pharmacy operations and patient experience.
  • Divergent Views on Responsibility: Despite the relatively small sample size, the investigation found that 50% of pharmacists believe wholesalers are responsible for the quota issue, while the other 50% attribute the issue to specific strategies of pharmaceutical companies.

The perception of pharmacists related to quotas presents a unique opportunity for pharmaceutical companies to better support pharmacists and counter negative perceptions. By addressing these concerns, pharma companies can enhance their relationship with pharmacists and contribute to a more efficient healthcare system.

Introducing the Pharmacontingentering Function

In response to the identified challenges, we are excited to introduce the new Pharmacontingentering function in our Pharm In Touch (PIT) platform, designed to streamline operations and improve the availability of products.

  • But first, what is Pharmacontingentering? This is the process of storing and managing medicines in a controlled environment, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of drugs. One issue that can arise is parallel trade or parallel import, where medicines sold at lower prices in one country are resold at higher prices in other countries. This can lead to shortages in the local pharmacy inventory, increased prices, and negative consequences for patient care, as pharmacists struggle to obtain enough medicines.
  • Informing PIT Members and Non-Members:PIT Members are all laboratories affiliated with PIT, a portal that connects laboratories and pharmacists. When a certain product is no longer available from the wholesaler, the pharmacist can report this through PIT, which notifies the laboratory and allows them to respond (by supplying the product themselves). This way, they can address pharmacontigentering (drug rationing).
Pharmacists can now inform both PIT members and non-members of out-of-stock products at wholesalers. This feature also allows pharmacists to order out-of-stock products from PIT members directly.
  • Portal Home Page Processing: Pharmacists can process orders from the Portal Home Page, ensuring a centralized and efficient system (not via company silos).
  • Automated Order Process: The order process can be fully automated in your Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and/or with your logistic partner, reducing manual effort and enhancing efficiency.

Stay tuned for more updates and initiatives aimed at improving pharmacy operations and patient care.
