Advances in analytics and machine learning technology are giving us access to insights at an unprecedented speed. The volume and velocity of data coming from personal devices, biometric monitoring, medical records, clinical trials, and hospitals and pharmacies have created a gold mine of information that can support the advancement of modern healthcare.

The challenge we must tackle now is how to make this data and technology a fixture in the standard of care.

Everyone in the healthcare space wants access to better information, but it has to be readily actionable to add value. Clinicians and investigators don’t have time to sort through a flood of data. They need purpose-built apps that bring insights directly to the point of care.

They rely on software developers to build solutions that can extract the right information in the right format and at the right time across the healthcare environment. At IQVIA, we believe that streaming analytics enables this speed and efficiency to support real-time patient care decisions.

Personalized analytics

The volume of data from connected medical devices is directly affecting what developers of healthcare-specific apps can accomplish, and how quickly we can deliver insights to decision makers. At the same time, we need to expand our analytic platforms to include touchpoints throughout the patient journey.

It is no longer enough to build an app that collects useful healthcare data, like heart rate trends or glucose levels. We need to think about the downstream impact of all this data, the technology required to capture it in real-time, and how we can apply that data in combination with other data streams to generate meaningful insights.

At IQIVA, our engineers have addressed this challenge by building data streaming platforms that can answer complicated questions about a patient's outcome in real time at the point of care. Our algorithms can interrogate 90+ billion healthcare transactions in a matter of seconds to answer care decisions in near real-time.

These streaming platforms can make easier for healthcare professionals to consider many facets of a patient’s condition, including their diagnosis, comorbidities, how other people with similar diagnoses have been treated, what risks they face, and what recent advances may improve their treatment experience. Having access to all of this data at the point of care can help healthcare professionals make more informed decisions with greater speed, which can lead to a better-quality care experience.

The future is streaming

A few years ago, this level of detail would have taken weeks to achieve. But with streaming analytics, we can run algorithms that answer these questions in seconds. Once widespread, the ability to capture, aggregate and analyze patients’ vitals in real time as healthcare events are happening has immense potential to modernize healthcare and the life sciences.

It will also push software developers to challenge what’s possible. We are entering a phase where engineers need to think end-to-end about a problem, and how they can build software to solve it. It will force us to break big problems into smaller ones, and to create new building blocks that will change the way we capture, analyze and share data.

At scale, these exciting technologies have the potential to revolutionize global patient care.
